Discuss the effect of a global media
The advent of digital technologies and the development of communication satellites have changed the form of media. This means that the sphere of the media has been extended and the size of media corporations has become bigger than before. These changes have led to the formation of a global media which delivers information or data across borders to meet the needs of information for people in modern society. In this situation, some people maintain that a global media has several positive aspects. Theses aspects are the acquirement of news, information and cultural awareness of other countries as well as public opinion. However, others insist that a global media has a lot of negative aspects which include the reduction of social responsibility, the emphasis on low cost, commercialism, and disparity between Western culture and Eastern culture. Therefore, this essay will argue that a global media has harmful effects in terms of cultural dominance by Western culture, focus on profitability through commercialism and narrow views due to monopoly.
There are some positive effects of a global media. One of these is that a global media by appealing to public opinion influences governments’ decisions. This is because a global media has stronger power of the press by the large number of viewers, unlike a regional media. Over 11.5 million people watch Direct Broadcast Satellite (DBS), people in 212 countries can watch CNN International and 1billion people around world watch CNN International everyday, according to Gutierrez (cited in Shah 2007, p.5). For example, after the brutality and oppression in Kosovo was broadcast, NATO’s armed forces intervened in 1999,
